At our schools, all of our students are learning in and through the arts. The Arts department has many talented teachers and support staff who provide the foundation from which students can further develop their talents.
Direct Instruction in the Arts:
Students in all of our schools are learning music, visual art, dance, and drama. Recorders and violins or cellos are introduced in grade 3. Band instruments are introduced in grade 4 using Smart Music technology. There is a Music Technology Lab at Woodlands Middle/High School. Jazz/modern dance, choral singing, and drama are introduced in grade 2.
African dance is introduced in grade 4. Musical theater productions are produced annually at the Richard J. Bailey Elementary School and Woodlands Middle/High School. Student artwork is exhibited annually in the Mansion Gallery and other community spaces.
Arts in Education:
We value our partnerships with Arts Westchester - providing residencies that support curricula (explicitly supporting IB (International Baccalaureate) units K-8), BOCES Arts in Education - providing artists for assemblies and workshops that support curricula, the Music Conservatory of Westchester – providing strings instruction and music therapy, the Steffi Nossen Dance Company – giving dance therapy, and the National Scholastic Chess Foundation.
